REBAJES MODERNIST BRACELET

Rebajes, a maker with a captivating "rags to riches" tale, was born in the Dominican Republic in 1907 to a shoemaker father. His journey to success began when he traveled to Barcelona to study, where he found inspiration in the architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudi. At the young age of 16, armed with only $300, he set off for the United States in pursuit of his dreams.

Upon arriving in the US, Rebajes supported himself through various odd jobs while immersing himself in the vibrant arts and literary scene of Harlem. In 1932, he married Pauline Swartz in a unique setting - spending their wedding night riding the Coney Island Local subway due to lacking a place to go. Eventually, they secured a modest space where they lived and worked, culminating in the establishment of a shop on 377 5th Avenue, designed by Puerto Rican architect Jose Fernandez.

Known for his distinctive style, Rebajes' bracelet showcases his early collaborations with luminaries of Studio Jewelry, such as Sam Kramer, in the 1940s. This unique piece stands as a testament to his innovative spirit and artistic vision, reflecting a blend of modernist influences and creative flair. Its intricate design and historical significance make it a rare find that captures the essence of Rebajes' pioneering work in the world of jewelry artistry.
